To make our lives a success, the one ability we need to master more than anything else is the ability of how to think and how not to think. Basically, having control over our thoughts. Thoughts have amazing power over our overall performance and well-being. For years, all of us have been believing that our brain was static, unchanging, and is locked. Though, our understanding has changed drastically to the point where we now see the brain is plastic and constantly changing.

We all realize the importance of our thoughts, thinking can make our heart race or slow it down. Thinking can make BP shoot up or sink, thinking can change the chemical composition, thinking can make us happy or sad. Simply thinking could affect not only the way your brain works but its physical shape and structure as well. So, we do need to focus on learning this art of thinking and having power and control over our minds.

Many people, don't even realize that they have the freedom and power to develop in themselves the emotions that they choose. We feel that our moods are subject to the external environment. That is why if something goes wrong outside, we feel that we are obliged to feel sorrowful, miserable, etc. The point that we miss out is that between the external environment and the inner emotions we harbor a gap. That gap gives us the freedom and power to master our thoughts and our emotions following our values and beliefs. Those of us who fail to understand this gap, their emotions are affected by the weather. Those who have learned to master their emotions, they carry their weather with them wherever they go and have the power to create their own reality. It's very important to know these gaps to gain control over your mind and its thoughts.

We do need to understand that our thoughts are not subject to the external environment. We need to learn how to control and master our thinking process. There is this one tool in relation to mastering and controlling our emotions and this is the tool of "Chintan". Chintan means repeated thinking, contemplation. Bringing one thought in our mind again and again and again, this process has a tremendous impact. The right kind of "Chintan" can elevate our soul to the highest heights and the wrong kind of children makes people commit suicide. Repetition of bad thoughts makes the person go to the point of committing suicide since we are affirming it. If the same thought process could be diverted in a positive, beneficial manner it would have such a tremendous impact.

Chintan can result in attachment to harmful things or attachment to beneficial things. This "Chintan" leads to the development of defects, vices, or the growth of virtues within us. Ved Vyasa in a scripture has written, "You repeatedly contemplated happiness in those material objects, that your mind got attached to them. Now change it, repeatedly contemplate happiness in something divine, something noble, your mind will get attached there".

Practice controlling your thoughts

From a neuroscientific standpoint imagining an action and doing it require the same motor and sensory programs in the brain. That is why today's science, neurology has developed a branch called neuroplasticity. What is neuroplasticity? Every time we engage in a physical act or a mental act of thinking, the neurons in our brain get fired. When those neurons are repeatedly fired in a particular manner, a neural pathway develops in our brains. Leading to that thought coming more easily again and again. If you repeatedly thought that happiness is in ice-creams and you contemplate over it, again and again. The consequence will be that the ice cream will come to your mind and start pinching you. If you think happiness is in being a noble person, virtuous person, happiness is in conforming to the will of God, then those thoughts will arise in us again and again.

Just like we create physical habits when we are repeating an action, we create a habit. In other words, the structure of neural firings gets stored as a program in the brain so it becomes easier again. Similarly, our repetition of thoughts creates mental habits. Those mental habits can be detrimental, they can pull us down or they can lift us up. So realizing the importance of Chintan or contemplation, we can dedicate a portion of our day to utilizing and harnessing its potential for our own well-being.

Find things to contemplate

Take a gem of knowledge from the scriptures and contemplate over it again and again and again. For example, "Anger is a bad thing, I must never become angry it will be hurtful and harmful". If you contemplate this again and again and do some mental practice, that in this situation I am not going to become angry. You will find that your behavior, your interpersonal relationships, everything will be transformed and you gain power over circumstances. Like this, there are so many gems of knowledge we receive from the scriptures. Why don't we benefit from them? LACK OF CONTEMPLATION.

So, pick one piece of wisdom and contemplate over it just like the cows graze the grass. Control your thoughts and consequently, your actions. Hear divine wisdom for a little while and then contemplate over it through the day. You will find you have developed a handle over your emotions and thoughts. If you continue the process, one day you will reach that point where you have become free of the environment. Where it doesn't matter how difficult the environment is. You realize, that your thoughts your emotions are your own choice. Irrespective of the externals we can always choose to be positive, to be hopeful, to be optimistic, to be devoted, and to be virtuous.

While your thoughts don't have some mystical or magical power over controlling your mind, mental practice is an effective way to prepare for a physical skill or develop good habits. Each thought actually changes the structure and function of your brain by affecting the neurons at the microscopic level. Always know that you have all the power over your thoughts. Which in fact can lighten up your mind? Know that everything external doesn't have power over us. It's us who gives those external events control over our mind. By actively engaging in positive thinking we can overcome all these adversities of life. Keep working on yourself, there's no stopping. Lots of love!
